The Gerald Perman Fund for Emerging Artists Recital

A recent alumna of the Metropolitan Opera’s prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Candian mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo is also the recent past winner of an impressive array of international competitions and prizes for emerging artists, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Operalia, and a 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award. D’Angelo kicks off the 2020-21 season as Cherubino in performances of Le nozze di Figaro at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich.

This program included selections by Florence Price, Rebecca Clarke, and Missy Mazzoli

Streamed April 9 – April 18

“The performance reveals a voice of cushioned lushness, intensified by a spiraling vibrato that is active but does not obtrude. Equally laudable is her choice of unusual repertoire, with songs composed by three men and six women, none of them too familiar and all of them worth hearing. It is little surprise that D’Angelo, in her mid-20s, has already won many prizes and performed acclaimed roles around the world. D’Angelo plied her robust tone most naturally to late-romantic songs of long-breathed melodies and chromatic vagaries of harmony.”

“Pianist Sophia Muñoz is an outstanding partner throughout the recital, and she brings particular expressivity to two songs from Arnold Schoenberg’s Op. 2, written in lavish pre-twelve tone style. Zemlinsky’s Straussian “Turmwächterlied” serves as centerpiece to the program, showcasing Muñoz’s gorgeous pianistic colors and D’Angelo’s luscious chest voice, dramatic pacing and technical command. Waves of religious ardor pour over the listener at the third verse, “Herr, nun kommen sie alle” (Lord, now they all come), and both artists ride the massive phrases with superb command.”

“A voice hued like polished teak…arrestingly vulnerable.”
